3 Productivity Tips for Small Business Owners

Small business owners, freelancers, and consultants have a lot of tasks to manage — especially if they don’t have an extra set of hands to help them get stuff done. Delegating to others is great way ensure that certain tasks get completed. But, if there isn’t a Gal or Guy Friday around (yet), the good news is that there are still many tactics small business owners can use to increase their productivity and successfully cross those tasks off  their to do list.

3 Productivity Tips for Small Business Owners

So, if you’re a small business owner, here are three tips that will help you to get more accomplished and feel like a productivity rock star every day.

1. Organize Your Workspace. If you’re really looking to improve your productivity, a well-organized environment can help you achieve that. So, set things up so that you can easily find what you’re looking for when you need them. Also, be sure that you have good lighting, that you’re using an appropriate desk that suits your work style, and that you’re sitting in a comfortable chair — but, not too comfortable. You don’t want to fall asleep!

2. Find Your Best Time to be Productive. Knowing the time of day (or night) that you tend to be productive can be really helpful. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Do you get started early and get a second burst of energy later in the day? Not sure? Do some testing. Monitor your work activity at various times of the day over the course of one week to see when you are the most productive. Then, use your best times as a guide for getting stuff done.

3. Focus on One Key Task. Pick one thing to work on (yes, just one!). Work on that one thing for that day. That one thing should be your top priority — the task you must get done that day. That’s not to say you shouldn’t work on anything else. It just means you’ll put your energy into completing your most important task every day. And, if you use your super powers to get additional things crossed off your list, well, that’s just gravy. Win!

4. Bonus tip! Turn on Some Tunes! If you can whistle while you work, why not listen to music to get your productivity juices flowing? Test out a few tunes to see which types works best for you. Try classical, songs you love, songs that you’ve never listened to before, or even instrumental pieces.

Or, simply let science help you find the right music to help you get stuff done. Researchers have found that songs with sounds of nature or nature sounds without music can be really helpful. Here’s one of the music clips I found on SoundCloud (called One With Nature) that I listened to while I wrote this post:
